How Long Does It Take To DIgest Gum? GUEST BLOG

Today's Blogger is Mandi.

The human body is excellent at breaking down nutrients from things we eat and using them for energy. While not everything we eat is digestible, it does not sit in our stomachs for seven years as the common myth states. Our stomach empties the unusable material into our lower intestine where it is passes to stool often enough to keep the stomach open and keep us hungry.

  1. Why this is very fascinating to me. When I was five I swallowed alot of gum at once and this would tell me wether or not I still have it in my system.

  4. Christa....

There’s no way that a piece of gum you swallowed during the first Bush administration is still in your stomach. “I can tell you for a fact, gum travels straight through,” says Patricia Raymond, associate professor of clinical internal medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk. ********“It doesn’t get stuck anywhere. It just travels downstream,”******* passing through the digestive system in 24 hours.

  5. I did research this subject and the gum does not stay in your stomach as long as thought. The stomach cannot break down it so it just passes like anything else. But it does take seven years to digest it normally without passing it. Some people think sugar free gum is better but instead the sugar subsatutes when swallowed it causes headaches, nausea, and dizziness.

  6. According to a source that I just looked at, swallowed gum takes somewhere between 24 and 72 hours to get discarded after being digested. Although it is not harmful to swallow gum every once in a while, it can be harmful if is done more than a few times.
